Mandolin and Guitar Workshop in January

Homer Pass and Daryl Jones gave a combined guitar/mandolin workshop on January 21.  Homer is a 2004 inductee into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame and has been performing and teaching for most of his 79 years.  His special guest, Daryl Jones, performs with the bluegrass band Birch Creek and the gypsy swing band Blue Django.  They are both excellent guitar and mandolin players and teachers.  The workshop was great fun and we all benefited from Homer's decades of knowledge and experience, and Daryl's great talent.  If you missed it and wish you had not, or went and would like to do it again, contact Mike Butler at 317-846-9610 or e-mail at mrbmando@sbcglobal.net

On December 11, 2005, world class mandolin players Mike Compton and David Long were in Indianapolis for a mandolin workshop and concert.  Several of us attended the workshop which was sponsored by Mark Kurkowski, Frank's Violins, and The Mandolin Society of Central Indiana.  Mandolindy performed a short opening set of three mandolin orchestra pieces (and an encore) at the evening concert, sponsored by Cary Allen Fields !  We had a great time !  Below is a photo of Mandolindy (we're the ones in the white shirts, some with ties) with Mike Compton (posing, hands on hips in overalls) and David Long (holding the mandolin) taken just after the December 11, 2005 concert, photo by Caleb Chapman:

Mandolindy performed as the opening act for Radim Zenkl at his November 12, 2005 concert in Indianapolis, sponsored by the Mandolin Society of Central Indiana and Frank's Violins, playing mandolin orchestra arrangements by Allen Richmond, with mandolins, mandolas, an octave mandolin, and a guitar, creating a turn-of-the-last-century acoustic sound not heard in Central Indiana for many decades  !   We had a great time !  Here are a few photos, taken by Caleb Chapman:

October 15, 2005 was Mandolindy's second annual performance at Billie Creek Village, near Rockville Indiana, with four mandolins, a mandola, and an octave mandolin.  We performed for the second year in a row as the opening act on the opening Saturday of the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival, at Noon and 4:00.  Thanks to Cindy and Marsha for inviting and welcoming us, and to Frosty for help broadcasting us throughout the Village.  We had a great time and everyone else seemed to as well.  Thanks to Dave and Phil Slates for setting up and running the sound system!  Here is a photo taken by Caleb Chapman:

On March 28, 2004, James Todd convened the first meeting of the Mandolin Society of Central Indiana.  By July of 2004, we had formed a performing ensemble now called "Mandolindy", and our first public performance was at the Eagle Creek Folk Festival, at Eagle Creek Park, in Indianapolis, Indiana, July 17, 2004, with 5 mandolins, a guitar, and a string bass:
